Reflection Prompt Module 3:
Reflect on what you plan to do to address the equity and ethics issues when applying technologies. You may share with us about what you have been doing by addressing these aspects and what you will change after learning in this module.
Description
Read and study the Equity and Ethics issues that need to be considered when using technology in an educational setting. Including consideration of privacy, safety, and copyright issues.
Impact
After studying this content I have found a new appreciation for my IT department and what had seemed like many needless restrictions. Now I have a better understanding of why certain websites are restricted; due to the (Children's Internet Protection Act). I also can see in a different light why I am unable to download material, although it is an inconvenience to me; it is grounded in sound practice to protect the system, the school, the students and myself.
While I felt I knew much of the information, such as rights to privacy, I was surprised that there were other areas where I thought I knew the law - but was wrong. The biggest example of this was the use of videos that were not related to content. I always thought it was legal to show a movie outside the home to a group provided you did not charge admission. What a surprise to find that I was dead wrong on this!
Intent
With this new information I plan to start to change those factors which are in my immediate control. Beginning with citing my sources for all materials I include on my presentations. While I have been good about citing sources where I may have gotten a power point or smart board presentation, I have never cited where I have gotten pictures or videos for my presentations.
I also will install better measures for protecting the student data on my laptop and my files. I will do this by creating more complicated passwords and setting up a couple of layers of password requirements. For instance I not only will have my computer access password protected I will also have my spreadsheets password protected with a different password.
